The true story of Maud, a painter who, despite serious lifelong struggles with arthritis and a less-than-ideal start in life, managed to make a name for herself as a famous artist through her illustrations.

Maud lives with her aunt. Gradually, she begins to long more and more for independence. When she learns that Everett, an old bachelor, is looking for a housekeeper, she decides to move in with him at his remote cottage.

At first, she struggles in the kitchen. Unfortunately, Maud and Everett’s living arrangement causes public outrage, even though they are not romantically involved. Over time, when they both realize they feel something more for each other, they decide to get married.

At first, they are supported solely by Everett’s job, but gradually more and more people become interested in Maud’s postcards and paintings, which bring in money.

Everett supports Maud in her painting. The brooding Everett doesn’t show his feelings for Maud very much, but his actions prove that he truly cares for her.

Everett is also a source of support for Maud regarding the trauma she carries from her youth. Maud was abused by her brother and became pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter whom she was told was severely disabled and had died.

Eventually, however, she learns from her aunt that her daughter is alive. Everett decides to help Maud find her daughter.
