Bamboo In Winter partly reveals the plight of Christians in China and their determination to follow Christ and serve God, even at the cost of ultimate sacrifice.
Ah Choi is a young Chinese girl growing up in a small Chinese village. There is a Protestant preacher in their village, but this is not to the liking of the Chinese Communists and representatives of the official state church.
Ah Choi’s father drinks alcohol to wash away the grief and suffering he has been experiencing since the Communists tortured him and his wife, who later died as a result of the torture. His daughter listens to the preacher’s sermons and reads the Bible.
She is so moved by the gospel that she wants to become a Christian, despite being confronted with persecution and cruelty by the state authorities.
The preacher baptizes several local villagers over the course of one night, at which point the communists arrive and want to arrest the preacher. The villagers calmly stand up to defend him.
The communists then start beating them with truncheons and eventually arrest the preacher. Ah Choi decides to follow in his mother’s footsteps against all odds. Eventually, Ah Choi’s father also finds the strength to quit alcohol when he sees the faith of his daughter embarking on a dangerous mission.
