Good Night and Good Luck is based on true events from the second half of the 20th century. The film was made in 2005, but in black and white, about the anti-communist campaign in the USA, which converged to a dead end.
The film deals with CBS news commentator Edward Murrow’s feud with Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy headed a Senate committee in the 1950s that investigated citizens suspected of collaborating with communists. The work of the committee, however, was often quite dirty and was built on the persecution of many innocent people.
As a result of the actions of this committee, people lost their jobs and their reputations. Senator McCarty’s campaign during the most chilling years of the Cold War can be compared to the political processes in the Eastern Bloc. Of course, the penalties in the case of the US were fortunately not so severe.
It was television coverage, quality investigative reporting and the courage of the editors that were behind the halt to this persecution.
The personality of Edward Murrow and the character he showed in this case should be a model not only for journalists.
Parents Guide: Edward Murrow fume une cigarette après l’autre tout au long du film.
