Paul VI: The Pope in the Tempest
The biographical story of a pope who tried to bring Christ’s light into turbulent times. He faced accusations that he had failed in many ways, but at the same time he was praised by others for showing the uncomfortable truth through works such as the encyclical Humanae vitae. The film depicts events that can lead viewers to a better understanding of the difficult periods of the 20th century.
Paul VI became pope in the second half of the 20th century. It was a century ravaged by the rise of destructive secularism. National Socialism and fascism, led by the socialist Mussolini, are a great test that the Church and the world have faced before. Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, is not yet pope at the time, but he experiences persecution and even physical attack from the fascists.
World War II, the Vietnam War, the Red Brigades, and the Second Vatican Council are all serious events that enter into the life and decisions of Paul VI.
However, the most serious blows that the pope experiences do not come from the world, but from within the Church. Paul VI faced schismatics around Bishop Lefebvre, who threatened the already fragile unity of the Church. In addition, the pope was greatly hurt by the number of requests for secularization among priests, which was largely the result of the sexual revolution. The decline in morality was exacerbated by demoralization through the media and the press.
He was pope from 1963 to 1978, and during his pontificate he wrote the prophetic document Humanae Vitae, which speaks of the sanctity of marital love, human life, and the evil of contraception, which opens the door to abortion.
He was the first pope to make pastoral visits to five continents. He was the first pope since the time of the apostles to visit Jerusalem.
