Maria is a cheerful young woman who loves music and nature and enjoys life. She is trying to live in a religious community, but she has not yet taken her perpetual vows, so she is still exploring whether religious life is the true vocation God has prepared for her.
The Mother Superior sends Mária to spend some time as a caregiver in a family with seven children whose mother has died. She has doubts about Mária’s vocation to religious life.
The head of the family where Maria arrives is Captain Georg. Military discipline reigns in the house, but Maria’s cheerful nature considerably lightens the atmosphere.
Georg plans to marry Baroness Schraeder and initially wants to send Maria away because he is dissatisfied that she has not maintained strict discipline in raising his children. Eventually, however, he changes his mind.
Over time, Maria wins Georg’s heart. When Maria realizes that a certain affection has developed between her and Georg, she decides to leave out of consideration for the relationship between the baroness and Georg. After returning to the convent, she struggles with her confusion and the longings of her heart.
The Mother Superior’s understanding and wisdom help Maria resolve this complicated situation.
