I am David
A moving story about sacrificing one’s life for another and helping an abandoned boy on his journey to find his mother. It is an adaptation based on Anne Holm’s novel North to Freedom.
David is a 12-year-old boy living in Bulgaria. He was separated from his parents and sent to a communist labor camp. After some time, however, he manages to escape.
He tries to reach freedom in Denmark, following instructions from a close friend. On his journey to freedom, he first travels by sea, then across the whole of Italy.
He meets interesting people, each of whom helps him or wants to help him in their own unique way. Gradually, he gets closer and closer to his goal.
During his journey, memories of his parents and the atrocities in Bulgaria regularly surface in David’s mind. David’s greatest source of help is an elderly woman who sees him as her long-dead son. She takes David to Switzerland, and thanks to her love of books, David learns that his mother is still alive.
