A true story exploring the life of the most famous Afro-American baseball player, who rewrote history. Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signs a contract with Jackie Robinson. Both men become a thorn in the side of the public, the press, and even the other players.
The film examines Jackie Robinson’s arrival on the Dodgers baseball team, backed by its owner, Branch Rickey. Rickey resolves to fight racism in the sport, but for Jackie, the situation is at times unbearable due to constant humiliation.
Fortunately, he meets several people who become his support system and help him in his fight against prejudice. The main storyline follows Jackie’s successes in his baseball career and his day-to-day interactions with his white teammates.
At times, the film shows Jackie’s family life with his loving wife. Thanks to his courage, self-control, and talent, Jackie gradually succeeds in changing the minds of more and more people.
Alongside Jackie, Branch Rickey is the film’s main moral hero. His charisma is enhanced by witty and apt remarks stemming from his religious beliefs. The film also does not shy away from highlighting the immorality of his team’s manager or from generally ridiculing the racist mindset of that era.
