Civil unrest sweeps across the country. Entire regions are plunged into anarchy and lawlessness. Stores are looted, and residents are killed. Anyone who wants to survive must flee.

Amid the chaos of the fighting, a family of eight children tragically loses their parents while trying to escape. The eldest, nineteen-year-old Sophie, is forced to care for her siblings in the woods, where they seek refuge from the anarchy.

Their father was killed, and their mother and Adam, Sophie’s fiancé, are missing. As Sophie and her siblings run out of food and face threats from raiding marauders, they are tempted to doubt God’s love. When Sophia discovers that her fiancé has resorted to robbery to survive, she wants to break up with him.

Over time, they realize that the attack on their home was not a random act of violence. Tangled truths begin to surface. Despite her doubts, Sophia does not lose her faith. Her pacifism and love even for her enemies seem, at first glance, like folly. The film’s climax, though somewhat idealized, quite aptly shows that Sophia’s attitudes, reflections, and decisions are very sound, rooted in Truth, and have deep meaning.

Although the film is full of gunfire and frequent killings, these scenes are not included aimlessly. The intent is to show the desperation and dire situation that even a person who refuses to use weapons inevitably experiences during such extreme events. His principles are put to the test, as he overcomes major dilemmas and temptations.

Understandably, people often find themselves in situations where it is difficult for them to accept the suffering present in the world and to maintain their faith in a good, loving God. Reflecting on this link may help them understand that these realities need not be contradictory.
