Anuja
The story takes place in Delhi and follows nine-year-old Anuja, who, along with her older sister Palak, works in a textile workshop so they can survive after the death of their parents.
Anuja is exceptionally gifted, especially in math. The workshop owner, Mr. Verma, takes advantage of her ability to do quick calculations and promises her a “promotion” and a higher salary if she stays to work instead of going to school.
One day, the principal of the local school notices Anuja. He offers her the chance to take an entrance exam and secure a spot at the school—which could change her life.
The film presents Anuja with a difficult decision. She can either go to school, where she’ll have a chance at an education and a better life, but she’ll leave behind her sister, who depends on her both financially and emotionally. Or she can stay at the workshop, where she’ll help her sister maintain their precarious livelihood, but she’ll give up her own future.
This conflict reflects the broader issues of child labor, poverty, and limited opportunities for girls in similar circumstances.
