I Confess
A bravura story from Alfred Hitchcock, the master of the detective story, with a message of courage and honesty from a priest who holds his life and the life of a murderer in his hands. Father Logan is a symbol of honesty, integrity, firmness, principle and courage. Throughout the film weaves the idea of fidelity to one’s vocation and faithfulness to God, despite the pitfalls, which take many forms.
Keller is an immigrant from Germany who is hosted in Canada by Father Logan at his rectory with his wife. Unable to bear the fact that his wife has to work hard so that they have enough money to live on, Keller resolves that he will steal from Villete, a wealthy lawyer for whom he is employed. However, while stealing, Villete catches him and Keller kills him.
He commits the murder in a priest’s robes, and as he leaves Villete’s house, he is seen by two schoolgirls, after whose testimony suspicion falls on Father Logan. Father Logan is also suspected for other reasons.
The case is further complicated by the fact that Father Logan, before becoming a priest, was in love with Ruth, who is also implicated in the incident. Father Logan is arrested. A trial begins and he faces the possibility of being sentenced to death by hanging.
Keller, not intending to defend Father Logan, has no plans to confess, he is only concerned that he not be the one who ends up on the ropes. That’s why he hopes Father Logan won’t reveal the confession secret.
