Molokai: The Story of Father Damien
A film about Father Damien de Veuster, a humble and devoted Belgian priest and missionary who devoted his life to serving lepers in missions in Hawaii in the second half of the 19th century. It is the story of an inspiring man who fought for the rights of those rejected by society with his courage and fervent love.
Father Damien volunteered to serve among the lepers on the island of Molokai. Soon after his arrival, he became a protector of local women against sexual abuse and a fighter against widespread alcoholism.
Molokai is a place where people die in isolation, without the necessary medical care, from the effects of leprosy. Saint Damien tries as best he can to provide at least minimal care to the many sick, but he cannot do this work alone.
When he writes letters requesting material or personnel assistance, his requests are ignored. Only after his brother generates some media publicity does he secure the arrival of several other people on Molokai who are able to continue the work he has begun.
