A film about a mother and widow who, by risking her life and enduring the pain of losing her son, helped change America. A true story of courage, determination, and love for other persecuted African Americans.

In 1955, the murder of 14-year-old African American boy Emmett Till shook America. It sparked several more protests and drew the world’s attention to the growing civil rights movement. At the heart of this true story is Mamie Till Mobley, Emmett’s mother.

Mamie puts her son on a train in Chicago and, sadly, will never see him alive again. After Emmett is accused of sexually harassing a white woman in a store, he is abducted and brutally murdered by two local men.

At Emmett’s funeral, his mother insists that the coffin containing his mutilated and bloated body—which had been pulled from the river—remain open. She decides to do this so that “the world can see what they did to her child.”

It was an unprecedented act of defiance against oppression and racial hatred. Emmett’s mother wanted to send a clear message that justice is not granted to all people in the United States. This woman managed to transform her grief into actions that inspired other advocates for the rights of the oppressed.

This event was one of several in history in which an open display of the violence and injustice that had been committed helped change hearts and minds and influence legislation. A similar act was the display of the piles of corpses found after the liberation of concentration camps from Nazi control. Today, it is equally significant to show the bodies of unborn children murdered by being torn to pieces during abortions.
