The film tells the story of Esther, a Jewish woman who became the wife of the Persian king Asuerus and thus the queen of Persia. The story is largely based on the biblical book of Esther, but there are moments when the plot deviates from the biblical account.
A king who has separated from his previous wife chooses Esther from among many other contenders for the throne, not knowing that she is Jewish.
The film shows how God’s ways are inscrutable and how God acts to rescue his chosen people from Persian captivity.
As in the Bible, the main plot points are the revelation of the plot against the king, Haman’s desire to destroy the Jews, and the rescue of the Jews at the intercession of Esther.
