A story about the relationship between a father and son that highlights the desperate situation faced by many Hispanic immigrants in the U.S. Alongside its negative characters, the film primarily showcases the honesty and kindness of many people who, despite their difficult circumstances, manage to treat others with love.
Good-natured Carlos leads a difficult life as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. He must constantly evade the police while working hard to gradually lift himself out of poverty.
Carlos cares for his teenage son, though the two are quite distant from one another. This is largely due to the fact that, because of his work, Carlos hasn’t had enough time for his son for years.
One day, Carlos buys a new car that he intends to use for work, but one of his coworkers steals it and sells it on the black market. Carlos is at his wits’ end, but he’s determined to get the car back.
This incident ultimately helps bring Carlos and his son closer together. Although they manage to get the car back, they are soon pulled over by the police. Carlos is subsequently sent to prison. His son is placed in the care of his sister, who is married and living in the U.S.
