In January 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the Hudson” when Captain Sully Sullenberger made an emergency landing with a damaged plane on the Hudson River flowing through New York City, saving the lives of the 155 passengers on board. Although the public and the media hailed it as an extraordinary feat that demonstrated his piloting skills, the ongoing investigation threatened to destroy his reputation and career.

Pilot Sully takes off from a New York airport, but shortly after takeoff, the plane collides with a large flock of birds. As a result, both of the plane’s engines are damaged. The pilots begin to assess the situation, but time is against them.

Air traffic control suggests landing at one of two nearby airports. Pilot Sully and his co-pilot see the situation differently. The plane is rapidly descending toward the ground, and attempting a standard landing would end in disaster. Therefore, they decide on a maneuver that will allow them to land on the Hudson River.

The landing is successful, and despite the 20-degree freeze, all the passengers are rescued thanks to further acts of bravery. People and the media speak of a miracle and the pilot’s heroic feat.

For the modest Sully, this is just the beginning. He faces an investigation by the airline, and the situation doesn’t look very good for him. Flight simulators suggest that he failed as a pilot and that he should have been able to land safely at the airport.
