Francesca Cabrini arrives in New York with the goal of establishing a charitable and healthcare ministry for orphaned children and the poor. She finds herself in the inhospitable Five Points neighborhood, where she encounters resistance to her efforts to help.

Cabrini tries to gain the support of the local archbishop, Corrigan, who is, however, quite reluctant. Together with her fellow sisters, Cabrini cares for many children and regularly takes to the streets to search for more abandoned orphans.

The story follows Cabrini as she struggles to secure funding and support for her projects. After the tragic death of one of her assistants, Cabrini decides to build a hospital to provide better healthcare to those who are most despised.

Despite enormous obstacles and personal sacrifices, Cabrini became a prominent figure in the history of aid to immigrants. The film is a celebration of her life and legacy—a celebration of the first American saint, who was canonized and became the patron saint of immigrants. Her religious order spread throughout the world.
