The inspiring biographical story Petra de San José tells the tale of Sister Petra of St. Joseph (1845–1906), the founder of the religious order Madres de Desamparados y San José de la Montaña. The film tells the story of a courageous young woman who helped the homeless and the poor in 19th-century Spain.

The story begins in Petra’s youth and follows not only her relationship with a young suitor but also the birth of her spiritual calling. It also intertwines with events of the Spanish Civil War, including miraculous moments following her death.

Ana, later Sister Petra, grows up in the Spanish valley of Abdalajís. Her life changes when she becomes a nun and begins to devote herself to the abandoned. She establishes shelters, hospitals, and homes for the poor.

Her journey includes demanding work at the hospital in Vélez, as well as struggles with church authorities.
