The film On Wings of Eagles (The Last Race) is inspired by real events and explores remarkable periods in the life of Eric Liddell following his gold medal win at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Liddell returns to China, where he was born to missionary parents. In China, he tries to live a quiet life so he can educate poor children, but the events of the war severely disrupt his plans.
In 1937, at the start of World War II, China is invaded by Japan. Liddell and his friend and staunch resistance fighter Xu Niu sense the growing danger.
Liddell feels a commitment to his students, so he decides to remain in China rather than flee to the West. Liddell, along with other foreign nationals, is captured by the Japanese and placed in one of many internment camps.
Thanks to his Christian faith, he is able to convey a message of hope and self-sacrifice out of love for others, even under difficult conditions.
An Oscar-winning film about Eric Liddell, *Chariots of Fire* (1983), was also made in the past. It chronicled his life from childhood through to his tremendous athletic success at the 1924 Olympic Games.
