War disrupts the simple yet beautiful life of a young family. Although at first glance it seems that the family is too far removed from the reality of World War II, the tentacles of the war’s fury strike devastatingly even at this family hidden away in the Alps.

Franz Jägerstätter lives with his beloved wife and children in the Austrian village of Radegund, nestled in the heart of the picturesque Alps. Hard work alternates with the joys of life.

The farm where they live is sheltered from the greatest horrors of World War II. However, it is not sheltered from the conscription of men into battle in the service of Hitler’s Third Reich. Franz refuses to go to war because it goes against his conscience. At first, the family faces harsh rejection from their community, which views collaboration with the Nazis as a natural and proper service to the homeland.

The situation eventually comes to a head, and Franz is arrested. He is subjected to interrogation and torture. He refuses to reconsider his stance to avoid the impending death penalty. Instead, he remains steadfast in his belief in the sanctity and inviolability of human life.
